I think it's near-miraculous that it was reported as widely as it was. I also think it's pretty damned embarrassing that the situation is so dire that our soldiers, who are generally trained to be quiet, are willing to make such pointed accusations.

Let's hope this sort of hard-questioning starts to become more common. I just wish it had happened two months ago.

One of the big problems over there is equipment in general, but armor specifically, and it has been for three years. The Guard companies do not have equivalent equipment to fulltime Army companies. Some army companies' trucks, fully armored, have never been used, while the Guardsmen are running convoys in unarmored/partially armored vehicles that are rather old and getting beat up. Second, this problem has gone on for 3 years and still isn't fixed despite promises. Also, in the last three years, it's clear the frontline (until the US goes on the offensive) are the convoys, largely made up of National Guard companies, like the one from Paris, and their partially armored older vehicles. The guy who asked the question, was going to the frontline, without proper armor.

It looks like a journalist prompted him to ask the question. So what? He asked it and got applause from the other troops who were thinking the same thing.

Now this is a problem if you are a soldier, or you love one of the soldiers over there. But stepping back from that, this needs looked at in relation to a larger problem about fighting a type of warfare big armies can't win and shouldn't be fighting in the first place. It brings us back to EXIT plans.
